История Negrar di Valpolicella

History and origins

In pre-Roman times the Negrar valley was inhabited by the Arusnati, a Rhaetic population settled in the hills around Verona. In the Middle Ages the town was a free commune, before being absorbed into the Scaliger lordship in the fourteenth century and later into the domains of the Republic of Venice, under which it obtained the right to hold a livestock market in 1791. The territory's long agricultural continuity was confirmed in 2020 by the discovery, among a vineyard's rows, of a Roman villa from the imperial period with fine polychrome mosaics, evidence of rural settlements that were already flourishing here two thousand years ago.

The capital of Amarone

Negrar is considered the heart of the classic Valpolicella zone, the historic production area of the great Veneto reds: Amarone, Ripasso, Recioto and Valpolicella Classico. The name Amarone was officially adopted in 1968, the year the Valpolicella Doc was established, though the grape drying technique from which this wine is born has much older roots. The area's wineries, many of which can be visited, tell of a method that combines peasant tradition with oenological research, and remain the main reason visitors choose Negrar as a base for exploring Valpolicella.

Historic villas and wineries

Villa Mosconi Bertani, an eighteenth century neoclassical Venetian villa, today also houses a winery where visitors can trace the history and production of Amarone Classico. Villa Rizzardi, an elegant eighteenth century residence with a refined façade and interiors decorated with stuccoes and frescoes, is home to the celebrated Giardino di Pojega, one of the most striking surviving examples of a historic Veneto garden. Visiting these residences means combining the story of the Venetian countryside nobility with that, running in parallel, of the territory's winemaking vocation.

Events and traditions

Since the 1950s, at Easter, Negrar hosts the Palio del Recioto e dell'Amarone, three days of tastings and food and wine events in which local wineries compete for the best Recioto, culminating in an international level cycling race. It is the event that best captures the unbreakable bond between the community and its wine, and a good time to visit the town alongside many enthusiasts and producers.

Nature and trails

Five historic trails cross the Negrar valley, to be walked or cycled, through morainic hills, terraced vineyards and small hamlets: from the route linking Novare to Arbizzano, about an hour and a half on foot, to the shorter one on the Masua hill, also suitable by bike. These are undemanding routes that nonetheless offer views of the Valpolicella landscape from different angles, away from the main roads.
