Preganziol lies along the Terraglio, the historic road linking Treviso to Mestre and the Venetian lagoon, a position that has deeply shaped its history. It is a commuter town, grown up south of Treviso toward Mestre, combining a modern residential and business fabric with one of the most significant clusters of Venetian villas along the whole Terraglio. Starting in the sixteenth century, the Venetian aristocracy chose to build its summer residences here, leaving behind mansions that still line the road today. It is not an open air museum, but a place where the everyday life of the Treviso suburbs coexists with architecture of real value, for anyone who knows where to look along the tree lined straight road once travelled by Venetian noble carriages and later renewed under Napoleon. Walking it today means shifting pace between the historic villa gardens and the shopfronts of modern businesses, a dialogue between eras that is perhaps the town's most distinctive trait.

The story

The story of Preganziol

History and origins

The history of Preganziol is closely tied to that of the Terraglio. As early as the thirteenth century a canal was dug to connect Treviso to Mestre and the lagoon: the excavated earth, piled along the banks and packed down by the passage of travellers and carts, formed an embankment (terraleum in Latin) that eventually replaced the canal as the main route, giving the road its name, Terraglio. From 1517 wealthy Venetians began buying land along this road to build their summer villas, and between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries the stretch running through Preganziol filled with mansions belonging to families such as the Pesaro, the Querini, the Loredan and the Morosini. In the nineteenth century Napoleon had the road widened and reinforced, and since then it has also been known as the strada napoleonica.

What to see and main sights

Among the villas facing the Terraglio within Preganziol's territory, Villa Albrizzi Franchetti best tells the cultural story of these residences: built between 1680 and 1700, it was the home of Isabella Teotochi Albrizzi, who held a celebrated literary salon there, frequented among others by Ippolito Pindemonte, Antonio Canova and Ugo Foscolo. Walking along the Terraglio reveals other eighteenth century facades interspersed with more recent development, a sign of a town that has kept growing around its historic axis without turning into a sequence of monuments detached from daily life.

Nature and surroundings

The Terraglio itself, with its double row of century old plane trees, remains one of the most recognisable landscape features of the area, a long tree lined avenue that ideally links Treviso to the lagoon. Around the historic road, the town opens onto the flat countryside typical of the Treviso suburbs, with neighbourhood green spaces and a network of cycle paths that make it possible to reach both Treviso and Mestre without a car.

Local life and economy

Preganziol is today one of the more populous towns in the southern Treviso suburbs, grown as a residential area for people working in Treviso or Mestre and as a base for shops and small businesses along its main roads. The coexistence of the Terraglio's historic heritage with more recent urban development is a trait shared by many towns in this part of Veneto, where residential growth has reshaped what was once farmland.

How to get there and location

Preganziol lies along the Terraglio regional road, about 13 kilometres from Mestre and just a few kilometres south of Treviso, of which it is effectively an urban extension. Served by frequent bus connections to both cities and easily reached by car, its location makes it a natural stop for anyone travelling the Terraglio in search of Venetian villas between Treviso and the lagoon.
