Roncade is a municipality on the Treviso plain, just minutes from the border with the province of Venice, that owes its renown to a single great landmark: the Castello di Roncade, one of the very few pre-Palladian Venetian villas still surrounded by its walls. Built in 1508 on the remains of a tenth century castle donated by Emperor Otto II, the complex was inhabited for four centuries by the Giustinian family, tied to the history of the Serenissima, before passing in the twentieth century to the Ciani Bassetti family, who restored it and revived it as a wine estate. Around the castle, Roncade remains a small agricultural town on the plain, where the vineyards that feed an important wine production of the Marca Trevigiana coexist with ordinary provincial life. Outside the castle walls there are no other major monuments, but an orderly farming landscape that makes Roncade a natural stop, more than a destination in its own right, for those exploring the plain between Treviso and the lagoon.

The story

The story of Roncade

History: the Castello di Roncade

The Castello di Roncade stands on the ruins of a tenth century castle donated by Emperor Otto II, whose surrounding walls survive to this day. In 1508 the Venetian nobleman Girolamo Giustinian had the present Renaissance villa built within the ancient walls, making it one of the very few examples of a pre-Palladian Veneto villa still fortified. For four centuries the complex was inhabited by the Giustinian family, among the most illustrious in the history of the Republic of Venice, before passing at the beginning of the twentieth century to the Ciani Bassetti family, who oversaw its restoration and the replanting of its vineyards.

The castle today: wine and visits

Today the Castello di Roncade is at once a historic residence open to visitors and an active winery, with a hundred and ten hectares of vineyard characterised by clay soil layered with caranto, the ancient sediment typical of the Veneto plain, just centimetres below the surface. This soil composition, combined with a favourable microclimate, contributes to the quality of the estate's wines, fragrant whites and full-bodied reds that represent one of the more interesting expressions of winemaking in the Marca Trevigiana.

Food, wine and local produce

The Castle's wine production fits into a broader agricultural context, that of the plain between the Sile and Piave rivers, where Roncade shares with neighbouring municipalities a tradition of still and sparkling wines from the Piave Doc and lowland Prosecco areas. Alongside wine, local cuisine follows the rhythms of the Treviso countryside, with radicchio, asparagus and game based dishes, in a territory that still relies on solid, diversified agriculture.

Local life and location

Beyond the castle, Roncade is a small town on the plain, with an economy combining agriculture, small business and services linked to its proximity to both Treviso and the Venice metropolitan area, only a few kilometres away. It is a town that balances the twin influence of the two provinces, without fully belonging to either of the two nearby major cities.

Getting there

Roncade lies along the road connecting Treviso to Venice, about fifteen kilometres from the provincial capital and a similar distance from the Quarto d'Altino motorway exit on the A4. The town is easily reached by car and is served by bus connections to Treviso and Venezia Mestre.
