Seren del Grappa is a municipality in the province of Belluno occupying the northern slope of the Monte Grappa massif, in the valley carved by the Caorame stream, known as Val di Seren. The territory, running from the valley floor up to the high-altitude mountain huts near the summit of Grappa, bears the deep marks of the First World War: the massif was the scene of some of the harshest battles on the Italian front, and trenches, forts and war memorials still dot the slopes today, including the one facing Seren. Alongside this wartime memory, the municipality lives on a mountain economy of livestock farming, huts active in the summer season, and the traditional cultivation of chestnuts, which find an ideal habitat in the woods of Grappa. It is a destination for those seeking genuine mountains, wide views over the Veneto plain, and a pace of life still tied to the seasonal cycle.

The story

The story of Seren del Grappa

Val di Seren and the Belluno slope of Grappa

The municipal territory unfolds along Val di Seren, the valley followed by the Caorame stream as it climbs the northern slope of the Monte Grappa massif, in a stretch of Belluno mountains less frequented than the Treviso and Vicenza slopes of the same mountain. The landscape alternates chestnut and beech woods in the lower reaches, pastures and mountain huts further up, and finally summit meadows overlooking the Veneto plain. This out-of-the-way position has preserved a more authentic character than the busier routes climbing Grappa from other slopes, keeping an atmosphere of mountains lived in rather than merely visited.

Monte Grappa and the memory of the First World War

The Monte Grappa massif was one of the bloodiest fronts of the First World War, the site of decisive battles after the retreat at Caporetto in 1917 and through to the end of the conflict in 1918. On the slope facing Seren del Grappa, as across the whole massif, trenches cut into the rock and the remains of forts and military positions survive, part of a defensive system that has left an indelible mark on the landscape. The military memorial (Sacrario) on the summit of Grappa, which holds the remains of tens of thousands of Italian and Austro-Hungarian fallen, can also be reached via the paths climbing from the Belluno slope, offering a route that combines hiking with historical memory.

Mountain huts and alpine grazing life

In the summer season the mountain huts of Val di Seren come back to life, with livestock brought up to graze following a cycle handed down for generations among local herders. Some huts also offer food and dairy products to visitors walking the trails, forming a meeting point between traditional farming and hiking. This activity, still alive but not overplayed for tourism purposes, remains one of the elements that best convey the lived-in mountains of Seren del Grappa, different from the more organised, staged mountain experience found in other, more mass-tourism-oriented parts of the Veneto.

Chestnut woods and forest produce

The lower and mid-elevation slopes of Val di Seren, with favourable sun exposure, host extensive chestnut woods, cultivated since ancient times as a supplementary food source for mountain communities. Chestnut gathering remains a keenly felt seasonal activity locally, often celebrated with communal gatherings in the autumn months. Alongside the chestnut trees, the municipality's mixed woods also yield mushrooms and other wild forest produce, part of an informal economy that still supplements the income of some local families today and reflects the close bond between the Seren community and the resources of its mountain territory.
