Baone is a municipality on the southern slope of the Euganean Hills, just three kilometres from Este, whose territory includes the hillside hamlets of Calaone, Valle San Giorgio and Rivadolmo, set among vineyards, chestnut woods and old trails. It is wine country, with Fior d'Arancio DOCG among its finest productions, and a land of medieval history: on the hill of Calaone lie the ruins of a castle that hosted the Este court during the wars against Ezzelino da Romano, while Monte Gemola is home to Villa Beatrice d'Este, linked to the memory of Blessed Beatrice, who spent her final years there. Baone lacks the monumental fabric of a city like Este or Padua, but it offers an authentic Euganean landscape, dotted with wineries, ruins and views over the plain, ideal for slow tourism made of trekking, tastings and territorial discovery.

The story

The story of Baone

A scattered municipality on the southern Euganean slopes

Baone's territory stretches along the southern slope of the Euganean Hills, between the main town and the hillside hamlets of Calaone, Valle San Giorgio and Rivadolmo. It is a landscape of volcanic hills covered in vineyards and woods, with small villages climbing the slopes and overlooking the Padua plain. Its proximity to Este, just three kilometres away, places Baone in a strategic position for exploring the southern Euganean Hills away from the busier spa towns of Abano and Montegrotto.

The Calaone castle and the Este court

After the fall of the Roman Empire, the area went through a long period of decline, resuming only after the year 1000, when it became part of the feudal territory of the Marquises of Este, gaining great strategic value. On the hill of Calaone the ruins of the castle still stand today; built in trachyte stone, it hosted the Este court during the struggles against the Ghibellines of Ezzelino da Romano and against the Da Carrara lords. Historical sources describe a fortified complex with a covered passage, locked doors and an imposing residential tower, surrounded by a wide vine-planted estate.

Villa Beatrice d'Este on Monte Gemola

On Monte Gemola, within Baone's territory, stands Villa Beatrice d'Este, a complex historically linked to Blessed Beatrice, daughter of Marquis Azzo II d'Este, who spent the final years of her life here in seclusion. The site, today managed by the Colli Euganei Regional Park, combines religious, landscape and natural value, with a panoramic view over Baone, Este and the surrounding plain that makes it one of the most striking terraces of the southern Euganean Hills.

Vineyards, wineries and the Fior d'Arancio

Baone's economy remains deeply tied to viticulture, with numerous family-run wineries scattered across Calaone, Valle San Giorgio and the main town. Among its flagship productions is Fior d'Arancio DOCG, an aromatic wine made from Moscato Giallo grapes, alongside a range of whites and reds typical of the Colli Euganei denomination. Many estates offer tours and tastings, giving a concrete opportunity to get to know the territory through its produce rather than through monuments alone, at a slow pace suited to genuine food-and-wine tourism.

Trails and trekking among the hills

Baone's territory is crossed by several hiking trails, including the route linking the main town to Calaone and the locality of Piombà, ideal for a half-day walk among vineyards, chestnut woods and scenic viewpoints. The Colli Euganei Regional Park maintains the signage for these routes, mostly used by local hikers and cyclists, though still little known to international tourism compared with other parts of the region. The gentle gradients make them suitable for families and less experienced walkers too.
