The story of Brenzone
A municipality made of hamlets
Brenzone sul Garda has no single centre, but is made up of nine frazioni spread between the lakeshore and the slopes of Monte Baldo: Assenza, Porto, Magugnano, the municipal seat, Marniga and Castelletto facing the water, Castello and Sommavilla higher up towards the mountain, and Prada among the woods. Each hamlet has kept its own identity, with narrow lanes, stone houses and small harbours, and it is precisely this fragmentation, unusual for a Garda municipality, that makes a visit more interesting: moving from one hamlet to another means discovering different views, from the livelier lakefront to the quieter lanes of the hilly hinterland.
The Church of San Zeno de l'Oselet
A short distance from the hamlet of Castelletto stands the Church of San Zeno, known locally as San Zeno de l'Oselet after the rooster-shaped weathervane on its bell tower, a symbol of vigilance. The building, in typically Romanesque forms dating from the 11th to the 13th century, rises on the remains of a Roman villa and preserves late Romanesque frescoes with Byzantine influence, while still serving today as a cemetery church on the lake shore. It is one of the most significant religious monuments in the entire municipality and is well worth a visit for anyone interested in medieval history and Garda's religious architecture.
Campo di Brenzone, the suspended hamlet
Campo di Brenzone, one of the highest and most secluded hamlets in the municipality, has documented origins dating back to 1023 and still retains the layout of a small mountain village suspended above the lake. Inside it stands a small church which, despite an eighteenth-century remodelled façade, keeps a structure of older, probably fourteenth-century origin. It is a quiet place, far less visited than Garda's better-known lakeside hamlets, ideal for anyone looking for a walk among stone houses and panoramic views over the lake below, away from the tourist traffic of the busier season.
The Olive Riviera and Monte Baldo
The landscape of Brenzone sul Garda is dominated by olive groves, cultivated on terraces sloping down to the lake: a tradition rooted in centuries of subsistence farming and one that today earns the municipality its membership of the Città dell'Olio association. Behind the hamlets rises the Monte Baldo massif, often called the botanical garden of Europe for the richness of its alpine flora, offering hiking trails of varying difficulty with views over Lake Garda. The contrast between the Mediterranean scrub on the shore and the alpine environments higher up makes Brenzone's territory particularly varied from a natural point of view.
Lakeside life and historic harbours
The small harbours of the hamlets of Porto, Assenza and Castelletto have always been the heart of Brenzone's lakeside life, starting points for boat connections to the western shore of Garda and for fishing, once the village's primary economic activity. Today, a summer tourist vocation, made up of lakefront walks, swims at small pebble beaches and restaurants overlooking the water, coexists with a spirit still tied to farming and fishing traditions. It is this balance between holiday life and authentic local life that sets Brenzone sul Garda apart from the more fashionable destinations on the lake's western shore.
