Brenzone sul Garda occupies a long, narrow strip of the lake's eastern shore, squeezed between the water and the slopes of Monte Baldo, which here drop almost sheer down to the villages' rooftops. The municipality is not a single centre but a cluster of hamlets facing the lake, from Castelletto to Porto, from Magugnano to Marniga, each with its own small square, tiny harbour and terraced olive groves. This is the so-called Riviera degli Ulivi, the olive riviera, a still-living agricultural landscape that coexists with a traditional style of tourism, less glamorous than some other Garda destinations. Anyone seeking the contrast between lake and mountain, able to move within minutes from a beach to a high-altitude trail, will find here one of the most authentic and least crowded stretches of Verona's Garda shore. The clear water, small landings and steep trails climbing toward the Baldo make up a landscape that changes character within just a few hundred metres of elevation.

The story

The story of Brenzone sul Garda

History and origins

For most of its history, the territory now included in the municipality of Brenzone was not a single community but a group of distinct villages that grew up along the coast, each tied to fishing and to olive cultivation on the terraces overlooking the lake. Only later were these settlements united into a single municipality, which nonetheless kept the polycentric structure still recognisable today as one travels from one hamlet to the next along the coastal road. This original fragmentation explains why Brenzone, more than a single town, presents itself as a string of small lakeside villages.

The lakeside villages

Castelletto, with its small marina and pedestrian lakefront, is the liveliest and most touristic hamlet, while Porto, Magugnano, Marniga and Assenza retain a more intimate character, made of narrow lanes, coloured houses and small moorings for fishing boats. Each hamlet deserves its own stop, and this very succession of small centres, each different from the next, is one of the most distinctive experiences of visiting Brenzone: the municipality reveals itself step by step, rather than in a single view.

Monte Baldo and nature

Behind the lakeside villages, Monte Baldo rises rapidly, offering a rare contrast of landscapes on Lake Garda: in little more than half an hour by car, or with a more demanding walk, one moves from the shoreline to mountain elevations, among woods, pastures and viewpoints overlooking the whole lake basin. Known as the Garden of Europe for the richness of its flora, the Baldo attracts hikers and nature lovers year-round, with trails of varying difficulty accessible from Brenzone's territory as well.

Olive oil and local produce

Olives have been grown on this shore of the lake since ancient times, favoured by the mild climate that Lake Garda guarantees even at this northerly latitude. The terraced olive groves sloping down toward the water are an integral part of the landscape and produce extra virgin olive oil of recognised quality, often protected under the Garda DOP designation, which local mills and producers offer for direct tasting.

Local life and economy

Brenzone's economy combines tourism, fishing and agriculture in still balanced proportions, without the large-scale development seen in other lake towns. Outside the summer season the villages return to a quiet pace, marked by the upkeep of the olive groves and small-scale fishing, while even in summer visitor numbers remain more modest than at the more famous destinations on the western shore.
