The story of Conselve
History and origins
The earliest documents mentioning Conselve date to 954, with the names 'Caput Silvae' and 'Caput Silvis', indicating a settlement that grew up at the edge of what was then an extensive wooded area. The town's first feudal lords were the Da Baone, Paduan nobles, before the territory passed under the lordship of the Da Carrara family. During the thirteenth century it came under the rule of Ezzelino III da Romano, before being subdued by Cangrande della Scala, lord of Verona, and finally passing, in the fifteenth century, under the government of the Republic of Venice. On 14 July 1866 Conselve was liberated and became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Italy.

The centre of Conselve keeps the layout of a market town, grown up around its squares and trading streets that still make it the reference point of the Conselvano district. The historic churches and buildings of the centre speak of a past tied more to agricultural and commercial life than to grand monumental events, while the town's hamlets keep a rural landscape of farmsteads, canals and cultivated fields, typical of the Bassa Padovana.
Food, wine and local produce
Conselve has always been an important market for grain and livestock, and over time its farming economy has built up a solid winemaking tradition: since 1950 it has been home to Conselve Vigneti e Cantine, a cooperative winery rooted in the Bassa Padovana, an area historically tied to viticulture, whose landscape stretches from the first slopes of the Euganean Hills to the countryside between Padua and Venice. Alongside wine, local farming keeps a strong grain growing vocation, in keeping with the town's tradition as an agricultural market.
Nature and surroundings
The territory around Conselve is part of the Bassa Padovana, a very low lying plain, in places below sea level, where water management through pumping stations remains essential to prevent flooding. It is a less spectacular landscape than other parts of Veneto, but a genuine one, made up of canals, orderly fields and a string of small farming towns stretching toward the Polesine, with the Euganean Hills visible on the horizon to the north.
How to get there and location
Conselve lies about 20 kilometres south of Padua, along the roads connecting the city to the Polesine and the lower part of the province. It is well served by intercity buses to Padua and easily reached by car via the Bassa Padovana road network, a convenient reference point for anyone wanting to explore this less travelled part of Veneto.
