Cornedo Vicentino lies in the Valle dell'Agno, in the foothill belt of the province of Vicenza, between the industrial towns of Schio and Valdagno. It is a hilly, productive town whose history has been intertwined for centuries with the wool district that made this part of the Vicenza area famous: here, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the abundance of water spurred the growth of craft workshops that gradually turned into full scale manufacturing, leading to the industrial development driven, from the nineteenth century, by the Marzotto family. It is not a traditional tourist destination, but a town that tells the story of work in Veneto's foothills particularly well, amid hills, streams and an industrial vocation still very much alive today. Even visitors with no particular interest in industrial history can use Cornedo Vicentino as a handy starting point for the Valle dell'Agno, between manufacturing towns and the first slopes rising toward the Piccole Dolomiti, in a setting that honestly reflects the hardworking face of Veneto's foothills.

The story

The story of Cornedo Vicentino

History and origins

Cornedo is among the oldest place names in the Valle dell'Agno: the name already appears in the year 1000, in an investiture act by Emperor Otto III to the Bishop of Vicenza listing the territories of the valley. In the following centuries the town followed the fortunes of the Vicenza countryside, but its decisive transformation came between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the abundant water of the local streams encouraged the growth of craft activities tied to wool processing, the seed of the future industrial district. From 1836, under Austro-Hungarian rule, the Marzotto family set up major wool mills in the valley, driving an industrialisation that would deeply shape Cornedo and its neighbouring towns.

What to see and main sights

The centre of Cornedo Vicentino keeps the imprint of a town that grew up around the wool trade, with historic industrial buildings bearing witness to the golden age of the textile district between Schio and Valdagno. The hillier hamlets of the municipality, set back from the valley floor, retain a rural character with stone houses and small churches, offering a quiet counterpoint to the valley's productive fabric. It is a landscape best read as a whole, industry and hillside together, to really understand the identity of the place.

Nature and surroundings

The Valle dell'Agno opens toward the Piccole Dolomiti and the area of the Agno-Chiampo Mountain Community, a territory offering hiking trails, mountain bike routes and mountain scenery only a short distance from the industrial centres of the valley floor. From Cornedo Vicentino it is easy to head up the valley toward Recoaro Terme and the surrounding mountains, a quieter, more natural counterpoint to the town's more productive character.

Local life and economy

The economy of Cornedo Vicentino, despite the changes of recent decades, remains linked to the manufacturing tradition of the Valle dell'Agno: alongside the legacy of the wool sector, other industrial and craft activities have developed over time, in the widespread productive fabric typical of this part of the Vicenza area. It is a town that lives on its own work rather than tourism, with a community used to a rhythm built around the factory, family and village life.

How to get there and location

Cornedo Vicentino lies about 20 kilometres from Vicenza, along the road running up the Valle dell'Agno between Schio and Valdagno. It can be reached by car via the foothill road network and by bus toward the valley's two main centres, making it a convenient waypoint for anyone travelling between the Vicenza plain and the Piccole Dolomiti.
