Salgareda is a town in the Marca Trevigiana, stretched along the right bank of the Piave river, between Treviso and the Venetian lagoon. Its name comes from the dialect word 'salghér', meaning willow, a tree once widespread along the embankments and ditches of this river plain. The area's origins go back to the Neolithic, as shown by stone finds around Campodipietra, while the modern municipality was formed in the early nineteenth century from the union of Salgareda with the former municipalities of Campo di Pietra and Campobernardo. The Piave remains the defining feature of the town, with its embankments, riverside woods and farmland overlooking a river laden with history, between agriculture and the memory of the First World War. Salgareda is a quiet farming town, appreciated by those seeking Treviso countryside along the Piave, away from the more touristy centres.

The story

The story of Salgareda

From Neolithic origins to the Romans

The earliest traces of human presence in the Salgareda area date to the Neolithic, between 2000 and 1000 BC, as shown by the numerous stone artefacts found around Campodipietra, whose very name recalls the presence of worked stones. Later, between the first century BC and the early centuries AD, the area was gradually Romanised, becoming part of the agricultural land-division system whose traces are still readable in the field patterns of the low Treviso plain. This long continuity of settlement makes Salgareda a territory with a history older than its present-day rural character might suggest.

The birth of the modern municipality

The municipality of Salgareda in its current form was created between 1806 and 1814, in the Napoleonic era, from the merger of Salgareda with the former municipalities of Campo di Pietra and Campobernardo, part of an administrative consolidation process that affected many small rural communities of the Veneto plain at the time. This composite origin explains the presence, within the municipal territory, of several distinct settlements, each with its own parish and community history, now united under a single administration but still recognisable within the fabric of the town.

The Piave river and its landscape

The Piave flows through the territory of Salgareda in wide bends, leaving riverside woods, gravel islets and grassy embankments along its banks, now crossed by paths and cycle routes. The river, famous further upstream for its role in the First World War, flows more gently here, through a farming landscape where cultivated fields reach almost to the water's edge. The floodplains, periodically flooded areas between the main embankments and the river's active course, host a still-rich river ecosystem, sheltering birds and other wildlife.

Farming and Radicchio Rosso di Treviso

Farming remains the backbone of Salgareda's economy, with fields of cereals, fodder and vegetables covering much of the municipal plain. The area falls within the wider production zone protected by the Radicchio Rosso di Treviso Protected Geographical Indication, an autumn and winter crop emblematic of the Treviso area, grown across several municipalities between Treviso, Padua and Venice. Alongside radicchio, local farms also grow maize, soybeans and fodder crops for livestock, keeping alive a rural fabric that stretches along both banks of the Piave.

Local life and economy

Salgareda retains a mainly agricultural and residential character, with a population partly working in the fields and local farms and partly commuting to Treviso and the industrial centres of the Marca Trevigiana. It is not a tourist town in the traditional sense, but its position along the Piave, within a well-preserved rural plain, makes it appreciated by those seeking slow tourism made up of walks, cycling and stops at village trattorias, away from the crowds of the nearby art cities.

Getting there and surroundings

Salgareda lies a short distance from Treviso and Oderzo, easily reached via the provincial roads that follow the course of the Piave. Its location makes it a natural stop for those cycling along the river routes connecting the Treviso plain to the Venetian coast. Nearby are other towns along the Piave, as well as the historic art cities of Treviso and Oderzo, both reachable in a short time for anyone wishing to enrich their stay with a wider itinerary through the Marca Trevigiana.
