Sarego lies in the southern part of the Colli Berici, in the province of Vicenza, in a transitional area between the hills and the plain of the Bassa Vicentina. The municipality includes several hamlets, among them Meledo, where Andrea Palladio designed Villa Trissino, an unfinished work of architecture that is nonetheless included in the UNESCO site of the Palladian villas of the Veneto. Among the area's other historic landmarks is Villa Da Porto, known as "La Favorita", a noble residence that still retains its original layout today. The slopes of the Colli Berici that fall within the municipality are planted with vineyards, part of a wine tradition linked to the Colli Berici denomination, while the lowland areas retain a more traditional style of farming. Sarego therefore stands at a meeting point between the Vicentine hill landscape, with its villas and vineyards, and the countryside of the Bassa, less well known but equally part of the area's identity.

The story

The story of SAREGO

Between the Colli Berici and the Bassa Vicentina

Sarego's territory extends from the first southern slopes of the Colli Berici down to the plain, in a landscape that alternates hillside vineyards with cultivated fields. This hinge position has long shaped both the farming economy and the settlement of noble villas, which favoured the hill slopes for their pleasant setting.

Villa Trissino at Meledo

In the hamlet of Meledo, Andrea Palladio designed Villa Trissino in the sixteenth century, conceived with a monumental layout that included curved porticoes and a large central block. The project was never fully completed, but the parts that were built are included in the UNESCO serial site bringing together the city of Vicenza and the Palladian villas of the Veneto, a mark of the work's architectural importance.

Villa Da Porto La Favorita

Villa Da Porto, known as "La Favorita", is another significant example of noble architecture in the Sarego area. The building, which belonged to one of the historic families of the Vicenza area, retains the layout and proportions typical of Venetian country residences of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The wine of the Colli Berici

The hillside areas of the municipality fall within the production zone of Colli Berici wines, a denomination that includes several red and white grape varieties grown on the limestone soils of the Vicenza hills. Local farms often offer direct sales and tastings for visitors to the area.

The hamlets and the countryside

In addition to Meledo, the municipality of Sarego includes other hamlets such as Monticello di Fara, which retain a rural character with small settlements surrounded by countryside. This division into several hamlets reflects the history of an area that grew through the aggregation of distinct farming communities.
