Vidor is a municipality in the Marca Trevigiana, lying on the right bank of the Piave river, at the gates of the Prosecco DOCG hills between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. The village combines two souls: an agricultural and wine-growing one, with vineyard rows climbing gently toward the hills, and one of historical memory, since in October 1918 some of the decisive clashes of the Battle of the Piave, which closed the First World War on the Italian front, were fought here. The bridge of Vidor, destroyed and rebuilt several times, remains a symbol of this passage. In the historic centre stands the former Abbazia di Santa Bonaventura, evidence of the long religious presence in the area, while the surrounding countryside is dotted with family-run wineries open to visitors. A few kilometres away, in the neighbouring municipality of Refrontolo, you can reach the well-known Molinetto della Croda. Vidor is therefore a stop that brings together wine, history and river landscape.

The story

The story of Vidor

The Piave river and the bridge of memory

The Piave flows along the edge of the village and was, for Vidor, the scene of crucial events of the Great War: in October 1918 the village found itself on the front line during the final battle that would lead to the Italian victory at Vittorio Veneto. The bridge across the river, rebuilt several times during the twentieth century, is still today a symbolic landmark for anyone wishing to retrace the history of those days. Walking along the embankment, with the river flowing gently among the gravel banks, helps to imagine the scale of the events that unfolded here, in a landscape that has now returned to a quiet, agricultural character.

The Prosecco hills

Vidor lies at the edge of the hilly area that produces Valdobbiadene and Conegliano Prosecco Superiore DOCG, recognised as a UNESCO heritage landscape for its rows of vines. While not in the heart of the most photographed hills, the municipality shares the same wine-growing vocation, with family-run farms cultivating glera and other local varieties. Many wineries offer tastings by appointment, often paired with a plate of local cheeses or cured meats. It is a way to get close to the world of Prosecco without the crowds of the better-known towns, in a more intimate and genuine setting.

The former Abbazia di Santa Bonaventura

In the centre of Vidor stands the former Abbazia di Santa Bonaventura, a religious complex that testifies to the long presence of monastic communities in this part of the Marca Trevigiana. Although it has lost some of its original functions over time, the building remains an architectural and historical landmark for the village, often mentioned as a stop for those interested in local religious history. Around the abbey lies the oldest core of the settlement, with buildings that trace the evolution of an agricultural village that grew around the parish and was later marked by the wartime events of the twentieth century.

The Molinetto della Croda, close by

A short distance from Vidor, in the territory of the neighbouring municipality of Refrontolo, stands the Molinetto della Croda, an old water mill set in a small gorge with a waterfall, one of the most photographed spots in the Treviso hills. Although it does not lie within Vidor's municipal boundaries, it is an easy destination to reach from here and rounds off a visit to the area well, offering a striking contrast between the mill's rural architecture, the water cascading over the rocks and the surrounding greenery, particularly scenic in spring and autumn.

Experiences not to miss

  • Walk across the bridge and along the banks of the Piave, between history and nature
  • Taste Prosecco at a family-run winery in the nearby hills
  • Visit the former Abbazia di Santa Bonaventura in the historic centre
  • Excursion to the Molinetto della Croda, in the neighbouring municipality of Refrontolo
