История Ariano nel Polesine
A municipality on the island between the Po's branches
The municipal territory largely coincides with the Isola di Ariano, a strip of land lying between two branches of the Po delta, the Po di Goro to the south and the river's main branch, also known as Po di Venezia or Po Grande, to the north. In historical terms this is a fairly recent geography: until the nineteenth century much of the area was marshland, periodically flooded, and it was only with major land reclamation works that the territory took on its present appearance of orderly fields, embankments and drainage canals.
Land reclamation and the birth of the farming landscape
The transformation of the Isola di Ariano was the work of major land reclamation schemes begun in the second half of the nineteenth century and continued into the following one, with pumping stations and canals built to drain the marshy ground and make it arable. The Ca' Vendramin hydraulic complex, in nearby Taglio di Po, is one of the best-known testimonies to this history, now recounted in a dedicated museum. Reclamation brought rapid population growth, as people were drawn by the availability of new land to farm.
Rice and clams, the products of the land
Farming in Ariano nel Polesine is dominated by rice growing: the Po Delta is one of Italy's historic rice-growing areas, offering the ideal combination of water and alluvial soil, today protected under the Riso del Delta del Po IGP designation. Alongside the flooded paddy fields, the brackish waters of the nearby valli and lagoons are used for fishing and for farming clams and other shellfish, an activity that has always run alongside agriculture in the local economy.
The main town and the hamlets
The centre of Ariano developed along the embankments and roads crossing the island, with the simple layout typical of reclamation-era villages. The municipality includes several hamlets scattered across the countryside, among them San Basilio, which looks out onto the Po di Goro branch. Village life still revolves around fieldwork and fishing, following a rhythm set by the farming seasons rather than by tourism.
The Po Delta Park and its nature
The municipal territory falls within the Veneto Regional Park of the Po Delta, established to protect one of Europe's most important wetland ecosystems. Canals, fish valleys and embankments offer routes suited to cycling and birdwatching, with waterfowl finding a favoured habitat here during migration. It is a flat, quiet landscape, very different from Veneto's better-known destinations, rewarding visitors who seek direct contact with river environments.
