История Borgoricco

History and origins

Borgoricco's origins are tied to the Roman centuriation of the Padua plain, a regular grid system of land division created by the Romans to allot territory to settlers. Even today the pattern of rural roads and field boundaries in the municipal territory follows that ancient layout, making Borgoricco a significant case study for understanding how Roman landscape organisation has survived into the present day.

What to see

The Museum of Roman Centuriation, set up inside the town hall designed by architect Aldo Rossi, is the town's main attraction: through artefacts and panels it tells how the Graticolato came about and how it remains legible in the surrounding agricultural landscape. The town hall building itself, with its tower and essential design, is a small architectural point of interest in its own right, an example of Italian postmodern architecture applied to a village setting.

Nature and surroundings

Borgoricco's landscape is the orderly, geometric one shaped by Roman centuriation, with straight roads and fields arranged along the ancient grid. Cycle paths and themed itineraries allow visitors to follow the traces of the Graticolato through the countryside, in a flat territory well suited to walking and cycling.

Food, wine and local products

Agriculture remains the backbone of Borgoricco's rural economy, with cereal and vegetable crops typical of the Padua plain. Local cuisine follows Veneto farming tradition, simple and tied to the area's seasonal produce.

Events and traditions

The museum and its related initiatives represent the municipality's main cultural draw, with guided tours and educational activities dedicated to Roman centuriation. Alongside these, the local calendar features the customary fairs and parish festivals typical of the towns of the Alta Padovana.

How to get there and location

Borgoricco is located in the province of Padua, a short distance from the provincial capital, in an area easily reached by car via the road network of the Alta Padovana. It has no railway station of its own; the nearest stations are Padua and Camposampiero, on the line to Treviso.

Local life and economy

The local economy is still tied to agriculture, alongside small craft and commercial businesses. Borgoricco retains a quiet residential identity, enhanced by the uniqueness of its archaeological and landscape heritage, which sets it apart from neighbouring municipalities while remaining a small-scale centre.
