History and origins
Caldogno's name has been linked for centuries to the counts of Caldogno, a Vicentine noble family who, over the course of the 16th century, had built the villa that still bears their name today. The territory, dotted with resurgence springs, was already frequented in ancient times for the fertility of its soils and the availability of water, factors that shaped its agricultural vocation from the Middle Ages onward. With the urban expansion of Vicenza in the second half of the 20th century, Caldogno became a commuter town, while still keeping a recognisable historic centre around its parish church and the Palladian villa.
What to see
The town's landmark monument is undoubtedly Villa Caldogno, built around 1565: although not included in Palladio's «Four Books of Architecture», it is considered an autograph work of the Vicentine architect. The frescoes in the central hall, painted between 1569 and 1570 by Giovan Antonio Fasolo and Giovan Battista Zelotti, depict scenes of villa life and historical subjects linked to the virtues of Scipio, framed by a sequence of illusionistic telamons. The complex also preserves an old aqueduct and a later bunker, testimony to the different eras the building has passed through; it is open to visitors today and hosts cultural events.
Nature and surroundings
Caldogno lies within the resurgence-spring belt of the Vicenza plain, the stretch of lowland where groundwater flowing down from the Prealps rises back to the surface, feeding channels, springs and watercourses that stay at a constant temperature year-round. This landscape, once essential for mills and field irrigation, remains a distinctive feature of the countryside north of Vicenza, appreciated by those cycling the minor roads among the towns of the belt, with the Bacchiglione river marking one of the area's main watercourses.
Local life and economy
A commuter town par excellence, Caldogno today combines a strong residential component with a widespread productive fabric of small and medium-sized businesses linked to mechanical engineering, construction and services. Proximity to Vicenza guarantees jobs and services, while the quality of the water and the fertility of the soil continue to support a solid level of agriculture, especially market gardening and fodder crops. It is a balance typical of many towns on the Vicenza plain, between contemporary urban growth and agricultural roots still clearly visible in the landscape.
How to get there and location
Caldogno lies just a few kilometres from the centre of Vicenza, of which it effectively forms a residential extension to the north, in a position that is convenient both for visiting the Palladian city and for heading toward the Asiago plateau or the Valdastico valley. The main connections are by road, with provincial routes quickly joining the Vicenza ring road; the reference railway station remains the one in the provincial capital, well served on the lines to Padua, Verona and Treviso.
