Canale d'Agordo and the Biois Valley
Canale d'Agordo lies in the Biois Valley, one of the valleys of the Belluno Agordino, in a setting dominated by the Dolomites and in particular by the view of the Civetta massif, one of the most photographed peaks of the Dolomiti Bellunesi. The modestly sized town retains the character of a genuine mountain village, with stone and timber buildings typical of Alpine Veneto architecture, and it is one of the valley's main centres alongside Falcade and Vallada Agordina. Its renown, however, extends well beyond the local area: Canale d'Agordo is internationally known as the birthplace of one of the most beloved popes in the recent history of the Church.
Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I
Albino Luciani was born in Canale d'Agordo (then called Forno di Canale) in 1912. Having become a priest, bishop and finally Patriarch of Venice, he was elected Pope on 26 August 1978 under the name John Paul I. His pontificate, remembered for the simplicity and smile that earned him the nickname 'the Smiling Pope', lasted just 33 days: Luciani died suddenly on 28 September 1978, leaving a profound mark on collective memory despite the brevity of his mandate. The bond between Canale d'Agordo and the figure of Pope Luciani is today central to the town's identity, which preserves his memory through a dedicated museum and the house where he was born and spent his childhood.
MusAL, the Albino Luciani Museum
In the centre of Canale d'Agordo, in Piazza Papa Luciani and next to the church of San Giovanni Battista, stands the MusAL - Museo Albino Luciani, officially inaugurated in 2016 by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, and run by the Fondazione Papa Luciani Onlus. The museum spreads over four floors and offers a multimedia trail telling the story of Albino Luciani's life alongside the history of the Biois Valley, giving visitors a view both of the figure's religious and universal dimension and of the more intimate, local one tied to his mountain origins. The museum entrance ticket also includes a visit to his birthplace house, located about two hundred metres from the town centre.
The birthplace house, now open to the public
The house where Albino Luciani was born was bought by his father Giovanni Luciani between 1901 and 1902 and remained family property until 27 June 2019, when it was transferred to the Diocese of Vittorio Veneto. First opened to the public in August of that same year, the house was fully inaugurated on 23 April 2022, with the installation of a statue created by sculptor Carlo Balljana. Today the birthplace house forms part, together with the MusAL and the church of San Giovanni Battista, of a route dedicated to the sites of John Paul I in his hometown, an itinerary that lets visitors retrace the stages of Luciani's life before his election to the papacy.
A mountain town with views of Civetta
Beyond its bond with Pope Luciani, Canale d'Agordo is a genuine mountain town of the Biois Valley, with a direct view of the Civetta massif and surrounded by the Dolomiti Agordine. It is a good starting point for summer hikes to the valley's mountain huts and pastures, as well as for winter activities in the nearby ski areas of the Agordino and the Upper Val di Fassa. The local community keeps alive craft and farming traditions typical of the Belluno mountains, in a balance between the religious and cultural draw linked to Pope Luciani and the everyday life of a small Dolomite town, where the memory of its most famous citizen coexists with the genuine rhythm of the mountains.
