At the mouth of the Val d'Astico
Chiuppano occupies a precise position in the geography of the Vicenza foothills: it lies exactly at the mouth of the Val d'Astico, at the point where the Astico stream, after carving a deep gorge separating it from the neighbouring municipality of Caltrano, opens out towards the plain below. This transitional position between mountain and plain made the municipal territory a historic crossing point between the Val d'Astico and the Thiene and Schio area. To the east, the landscape changes further with the hilly Bregonze area, adding a third landscape element to Chiuppano's territory, alongside the mountain gorge and the plain, making the municipality a small mosaic of different environments.
From fundus Cleppianus to the earliest documents
The origins of the name Chiuppano probably date back to Roman times: the toponym is thought to derive from the Latin 'fundus Cleppianus', meaning 'land of Cleppiano', likely an ancient local landowner. Roman-era finds have been discovered within the municipal territory, confirming an ancient settlement along this foothill belt. The first document explicitly mentioning Chiuppano dates back to 975, while in 983 the territory was donated to the monastery of San Felice in Vicenza, a transfer that attests to the role of monastic institutions in organising and exploiting the lands of the Vicenza foothills already in the early Middle Ages.
A parish born from the difficulty of crossing the Astico
One of the most significant episodes in Chiuppano's history concerns the founding of its parish. On 18 May 1419, the inhabitants asked the Bishop of Vicenza, Pietro Marcello, to be allowed to establish an autonomous parish, giving as their reason the difficulty, at certain times of the year, of crossing the Astico stream to reach the mother church. The bishop granted the request, formally establishing the parish of Chiuppano on that date. It is an episode that vividly illustrates how geography, and in particular the relationship with a watercourse difficult to cross, directly influenced the administrative and religious choices of a mountain community.
A hamlet of Carrè until 1911
Despite gaining parish autonomy in 1419, Chiuppano remained administratively a hamlet of the municipality of Carrè for centuries, obtaining the status of an autonomous municipality only in 1911. This long period of administrative dependence, in a context where religious and civil autonomy often followed separate paths, reflects a dynamic common to many small towns of the Vicenza foothills, where municipal boundaries were gradually defined over the centuries, often at different times from those of their respective parishes. The definitive separation from Carrè marked for Chiuppano the beginning of full administrative autonomy, maintained uninterruptedly to this day.
The 2018 referendum and confirmed independence
More recently, the idea of a merger between Chiuppano and Carrè, which would have created a new municipality called Colbregonza, returned to the centre of public debate. The proposal was put to a referendum on 16 December 2018, but the majority of Chiuppano's voters spoke out against the merger, confirming their wish to keep the administrative autonomy won in 1911. This recent episode shows how the bond between local identity and municipal autonomy remains a keenly felt issue today in many small towns of the Vicenza foothills, where ancient history and contemporary administrative choices continue to intertwine.
