История Colognola ai Colli

Among the Soave hills

Colognola ai Colli lies at the entrance to the Val d'Illasi, where the Verona plain gives way to the first vine-covered hills of the Soave zone. The municipality belongs to the Strada del Vino Soave, the wine-tourism route linking cellars and villages of this appellation, among Italy's most prestigious for white wine. From the Monte viewpoint, a wide stretch of vineyard-covered hills unfolds below, with views reaching as far as Soave castle in the distance. Walking among these rows, along both paved roads and unpaved paths lined with olive trees, is the most direct way to grasp the close bond between the village and its land.

The church of Santa Maria della Pieve

At the heart of the village stands the church of Santa Maria della Pieve, one of the oldest religious buildings in the area. Its origins date back to the thirteenth century, though local tradition holds that it rose over an earlier Roman place of worship dedicated to Mercury, evidence of a site frequented long before the present building. It remains the religious and visual anchor of the historic centre, around which Colognola's oldest urban fabric developed.

Venetian villas and the countryside of Val d'Illasi

The countryside around Colognola is dotted with Venetian villas set among greenery, including Villa Vanzetti and Villa Aldegheri, the latter enjoying a wide panoramic view over the Val d'Illasi. They stand as evidence of the settlement of noble Veronese families in this hilly area, drawn in past centuries by the quality of the land and the proximity to Verona. Today they serve mainly as landscape landmarks rather than formally organised visitor sites, yet they contribute substantially to the refined character of the local agricultural scenery.

The Sagra dei Bisi and local cuisine

Colognola ai Colli has, in peas, locally called bisi, one of its signature crops. Every May the village celebrates this harvest with the Sagra dei Bisi, a village festival built around the region's emblematic dish, risi e bisi, which draws visitors from neighbouring towns. It offers a chance to taste genuine Veneto cooking and to witness firsthand the still-living bond between the community and local farming.

Close to Soave castle

Colognola ai Colli lies just a short drive from Soave, the walled town dominated by the well known Scaliger castle that gives its name to the celebrated white wine. Visitors staying in Colognola can easily combine a visit to local wineries with a stop in Soave's historic centre, among its crenellated walls and the castle rising above the hill. It is a natural pairing for anyone seeking a food-and-wine weekend in the Veronese hinterland without straying too far from the city.
