История Fara Vicentino

Two hamlets, one municipality

The municipality of Fara Vicentino was formed by the union of two distinct centres, Fara and San Giorgio di Perlena, spread across a hilly territory that never had a true monumental old town. This polycentric structure is typical of many municipalities in the Vicenza foothills, where settlement developed as small farming clusters scattered among the hills rather than around a square or a castle. The name itself, according to the most accepted hypotheses, points to a Lombard origin linked to the early medieval military settlements widespread throughout the area. Visiting Fara Vicentino therefore means moving between its various hamlets, each with its own identity, rather than looking for a single town centre.

San Giorgio di Perlena and its church

San Giorgio di Perlena, located halfway between Bassano del Grappa and Schio on a rise overlooking the Vicenza plain, is the most distinctive hamlet in the municipality. The church dedicated to San Giorgio Martire has a documented history dating back to 1297, although the current building largely reflects the nineteenth-century reconstruction, begun in 1770 and completed in 1805. The tower-shaped bell tower, now a recognisable landmark, was itself rebuilt in stone between 1821 and 1828, after having been temporarily replaced by a wooden structure. It is a simple place, with no monumental pretensions, but one that honestly reflects the religious and architectural layering typical of small Venetian hill villages.

A farming territory, not a major tourist draw

It should be said clearly: Fara Vicentino is not a tourist destination in the traditional sense, and it has no major monuments to show off. It is a farming and residential municipality, where life revolves around the fields, small-scale livestock and the upkeep of a hilly landscape that demands constant care. Yet this very quality is what makes it interesting for those seeking an experience different from mass tourism: the chance to see up close how the Venetian foothill countryside still works today, among vineyards, vegetable gardens and scattered farmhouses, in a quiet setting largely untouched by the tourist flows of the nearby towns.

Hills, trails and views

The real landscape value of Fara Vicentino lies in its hilly profile, which lends itself to short but pleasant walks and hikes. The secondary roads linking the hamlets climb and descend among vineyards and woods, offering sudden glimpses of the Vicenza plain and, on clearer days, of the pre-Alps behind. There are no large organised hiking facilities, but the network of gravel roads and farm tracks is ideal for those who enjoy walking or cycling at a relaxed pace, perhaps combining the visit with a wider tour of the neighbouring foothill municipalities, from Marostica to Bassano del Grappa.

Community life in the small hamlets

As in many small municipalities of the Vicenza foothills, social life in Fara Vicentino also revolves around the small parish communities, local associations and village fairs that mark the calendar in the warmer months. These are not events designed to draw large numbers of visitors, but genuine moments of gathering among residents of the different hamlets, often linked to the church or the local proloco association. For visitors passing through during these periods, it can be a simple but authentic opportunity to see up close how life is still lived today in a small hilltop community in Veneto, far from the pace of the nearby towns.

Experiences not to miss

  • Routes among vineyards and hillside woods with views over the Vicenza plain
  • Tour of the scattered hamlets to discover authentic foothill countryside
  • Wider excursion towards Bassano del Grappa and Marostica, a short distance away
