История La Valle Agordina
Geography between the Cordevole and the Agordine Dolomites
The municipality of La Valle Agordina lies about twenty kilometres northwest of Belluno and just minutes from Agordo, the valley's main reference town. The municipal territory is largely mountainous, with peaks including Monte Zelo to the south, Talvena to the east and the San Sebastiano chain to the northeast, plus a portion of the Moiazza massif, one of the area's most imposing Dolomite groups alongside Civetta, visible on clear days from the municipality's higher slopes. The hamlets are scattered along the valley floor and on the hillsides, each with its own small church and cluster of stone-and-timber houses typical of Belluno alpine architecture, in a landscape alternating conifer woods, hay meadows and rock faces.
A history of mountains and emigration
Like most municipalities in the Agordino, La Valle Agordina also has a history marked by the harshness of mountain life: a subsistence economy based on pastoral farming, small-scale terraced agriculture and timber use, complemented for centuries by the phenomenon of seasonal and permanent emigration abroad, typical of the whole Belluno area. Not far away, in neighbouring Rivamonte Agordino, stood the famous Valle Imperina mining complex, one of the most important copper and silver extraction basins of the Venetian Republic between the 17th and 18th centuries: although it does not fall within La Valle Agordina's own municipal territory, that mining history nonetheless shaped the entire economy and identity of the Agordino, providing work and income for many families across the valley, including this community, for centuries.
Village life and alpine traditions
Today La Valle Agordina is a small municipality, with a population reflecting the general mountain depopulation seen across the Agordino in recent decades, but it retains a cohesive social fabric centred on its hamlets, parishes and local associations, including alpine clubs and groups for Belluno emigrants around the world. Culinary traditions follow the mountain cuisine typical of the area, with dishes based on alpine-pasture cheeses, mushrooms, game and polenta, often served in mountain huts and the few local trattorias. Patron saint feasts and summer events, organised by the Pro Loco and Alpini groups, remain the main occasion for community life, also drawing back those who emigrated to reconnect with their roots in the valley during the summer months.
Hiking and outdoor life
The municipal territory offers a good starting point for hikes into the Agordine Dolomites, with trails climbing towards high-altitude pastures that allow close views of the Moiazza group and, with a short drive to neighbouring municipalities, the famous Civetta. Trekking enthusiasts can use La Valle Agordina as a quiet base, less touristy than better-known Dolomite centres such as Alleghe or Selva di Cadore, for organising day hikes of varying difficulty, from walks between the hamlets to more demanding routes towards the rock faces. In winter, snow transforms the valley into a quiet landscape suited to snowshoeing and winter walks rather than large-scale downhill skiing.
A base for exploring the Agordino
Thanks to its proximity to Agordo, La Valle Agordina works well as a base for exploring the whole valley, including the historic Valle Imperina mines, now restored as a museum and nature area within the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, and the Agordino's larger centres such as Agordo itself, with its historic square, or Alleghe, overlooking the lake of the same name. Those staying in the valley can thus combine the quiet of a small mountain municipality with the ability to quickly reach some of the most interesting destinations in the Belluno Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, without the overcrowding typical of more famous resorts.
