История Mansuè

The casteir, traces of the ancient Veneti

The earliest evidence of human presence in the territory of Mansuè dates back to the ancient Veneti civilization, well before the Roman conquest. Among the most visible signs of this presence are the so-called 'casteir', small artificial mounds used to control and monitor the course of the Livenza river, already navigable at the time and therefore strategic for trade and travel. With the Roman conquest in the 3rd century BC, the area was assigned to the municipium of Opitergium, present-day Oderzo, thus becoming part of the Roman administrative and infrastructural network of eastern Veneto, a legacy layered onto the older strata of the local Venetic civilization.

From the Da Camino family to the present day

After the year 1000, Mansuè came under the influence of the Da Camino family, who had established a feudal lordship based in nearby Portobuffolé, controlling much of the territory between the Piave and the Livenza. The Parish Church of San Mansueto, built between 1488 and 1507, with its sixty-five-meter bell tower offering views over the surrounding plain, remains today the town's main architectural and religious landmark. It is a simple but solid building, consistent with the character of a municipality that has never aimed for architectural grandeur, but for a stable religious and communal presence over time.

The plain woodlands, a rarity of the Veneto lowlands

Mansuè's true natural treasure lies in its lowland woodlands, now a rarity in an area where original forests have almost everywhere been replaced by cultivated fields. The Basalghelle plain woodland, covering about five hectares, is considered one of the most important woods in the entire province of Treviso and has become a true symbol of the municipality's identity. The Bosco delle Viole, another wooded area located at the eastern edge of the provincial territory, completes this small but precious forest heritage. Walking through these woods means discovering what the Veneto plain looked like before the great land reclamations and agricultural transformations of recent centuries.

The Prà dei Gai and the river landscape

The territory of Mansuè is also defined by the meeting of the Livenza and Rasego rivers, which trace a gentle river landscape around the area known as the Prà dei Gai. These are meadows and lands touched by water, simple in character but pleasantly balanced in landscape, well suited to quiet walks away from traffic. The TV3 GiraMonticano cycle path, connecting Fontanelle to Motta di Livenza over about twenty-five kilometers and linking up with other regional routes, passes near the municipality, offering a further opportunity to explore at a slow pace this lesser-known part of the Marca Trevigiana, amid minor waterways and crops.

A community shaped by emigration

It is fair to be honest: Mansuè is not today an established tourist destination, and it is right to describe its real character before an imagined one. During the 20th century, the municipality was among those most affected by the great wave of emigration from the Treviso area, which led entire families to leave their land for Europe, the Americas and Australia in search of work and better living conditions. This memory is still very much alive in the local community, intertwined with the town's agricultural identity and with the deep, never-severed bond with this borderland between the Piave and the Livenza.
