История Monteviale

A village among the Vicenza hills

Monteviale rises among the first hills west of Vicenza, in a territory alternating vineyards, olive groves and cultivated fields with small rural settlements, in a gentle, well-tended landscape typical of the Berici and Vicenza hills. Its proximity to the city, reachable in a few minutes, makes Monteviale an ideal destination for those seeking the calm of the countryside without straying too far from the services and attractions of an art city like Vicenza. The modestly sized village centre keeps a simple, close-knit character, with the parish church as the community's reference point, while the municipality's true distinguishing feature lies just outside the built-up area, in the complex of Villa Loschi Zileri Dal Verme.

Villa Loschi Zileri Dal Verme, an 18th-century jewel

Villa Loschi Zileri Dal Verme, located in the hamlet of Biron di Monteviale, was built in 1734 by the architect Francesco Muttoni on a pre-existing 15th-century building, commissioned by Niccolò Loschi, who wished to celebrate in this way the public recognition of the title of count his family had obtained in 1729 from the Republic of Venice. The building, with its monumental staircase and festival hall, is one of the finest examples of an 18th-century Venetian villa in the province of Vicenza, both for its architectural quality and, above all, for the fresco cycle decorating its interiors, today considered one of the best resources for studying the early painting technique of a great Venetian master.

The young Tiepolo and his frescoes

The frescoes of Villa Loschi, painted by Giambattista Tiepolo in just three months of work in 1734, mark the transition from the painter's youthful phase, still permeated by the tenebrous influences of Giovan Battista Piazzetta, to a more classical, luminous phase enriched by the influence of Paolo Veronese. This fresco cycle constitutes Tiepolo's first work in the territory of Vicenza, painted years before his more famous frescoes at Villa Valmarana ai Nani, painted in 1757 together with his son Giandomenico. Thanks to their excellent state of preservation, the frescoes of Villa Loschi are today considered a precious source for reconstructing the stylistic evolution of one of the greatest figures in 18th-century Venetian painting.

An iconographic programme rich in meaning

The paintings decorating the staircase and festival hall of Villa Loschi follow an elaborate iconographic programme drawn from Cesare Ripa's 1611 Iconologia, beginning with the allegory of Time unveiling Truth and driving away Envy, painted on the staircase ceiling. On the staircase walls are also the figures of Innocence driving away Deception on one side and Industriousness triumphing over Laziness on the other, in an allegorical ensemble designed to celebrate, through the symbolic language of the period, the virtues of the commissioning family. This decorative scheme makes a visit to the villa an experience of great interest not only artistically but also historically and culturally, for anyone wishing to understand the taste and values of the 18th-century Venetian aristocracy.

Monteviale today, between hills and calm

Beyond the villa's artistic draw, Monteviale remains a modestly sized municipality, where daily life follows the quiet pace of the Vicenza hills, amid small farms, vineyards and a village centre gathered around essential services. Its proximity to Vicenza, a UNESCO World Heritage city for Andrea Palladio's works, makes it easy to pair a visit to Monteviale with a discovery of the city, in an itinerary combining the city's Palladian civic architecture with the villa's 18th-century residential architecture. It is a municipality that, while not offering a wide tourism scene, gives visitors an authentic experience, capable of surprising with the quality of the artistic heritage held in such a discreet rural setting.
