История Quinto di Treviso
History and origins
The hamlet of Cervara, within Santa Cristina, was in the Middle Ages a small village on the edge of a vast wooded area, its name likely linked to the presence of deer (cervo), a sign of the wildlife richness of these lands, then largely covered by marshes and woods. A water mill stood here, documented as early as 1325 and active, with intermittent phases, until the early twentieth century: it reached its greatest activity between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, when it belonged to the San Paolo convent of Treviso. Abandoned during the twentieth century, the mill was acquired along with the oasis land by the municipality of Quinto di Treviso in 1984, and starting in 1992 it underwent a restoration that saved its frescoes and rebuilt its machinery, including two wooden wheels.
Nature and surroundings
The Oasi di Cervara has the shape of an island lying between the Sile river and the Piovega stream: twenty five hectares of water and greenery, crossed by the river and dotted with fontanassi, the typical spring-fed pools of the area. Classified as a Site of Community Interest for the value of its wildlife and spontaneous flora, the oasis is part of the Sile River Regional Natural Park and represents one of the best preserved stretches of the river's course through the Treviso area, with footpaths suited to a quiet visit.
What to see and main sights
The Mulino di Cervara, restored starting in the 1990s, is the main point of interest within the oasis: its recovered frescoes and rebuilt wooden wheels tell the story of seven centuries of milling activity along the Sile. Besides the mill, the territory of Quinto di Treviso keeps its parish church and a few rural hamlets, while the town centre itself has a more modern layout, shaped by its closeness to Treviso.
Local life and economy
Quinto di Treviso is a suburban town, grown in recent decades as a residential area for people working in Treviso, but with a still significant share of small business and services. The presence of the Sile and its natural oasis has helped keep alive a local focus on the river environment, with protection and enhancement initiatives carried out together with the Sile River Regional Natural Park.
How to get there and location
Quinto di Treviso lies a few kilometres southwest of Treviso, along the road that follows the Sile toward Castelfranco Veneto. It is well connected to the city by bus and local roads, and offers convenient access to the network of cycle paths that follow the river, popular with cycle tourists riding the whole course of the Sile.
