История Sarcedo
Between the foothills and the Astico valley
Sarcedo's territory spreads across a fertile, partly hilly area at the edge of the prealps and partly flat land, bounded to the east by the Astico torrent, which flows down from the valley of the same name after collecting waters from the Val d'Assa and Val Posina. It is transitional geography between the Vicenza mountains and the plain, typical of the foothill belt between Thiene and Breganze.
From medieval origins to the Republic of Venice
The origins of the Sarcedo community can be traced to the eighth or ninth century, although the first document naming it dates to 983. The shift from the feudal system to communal government was not immediate but took place between 1050 and 1120, when Sarcedo adopted its own statute. In 1404 Vicenza, and with it Sarcedo, submitted to the Republic of Venice, whose fortunes it followed until French rule from 1797 to 1813, then Austrian rule from 1813, until annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
Villa Capra Bassani, a Palladian legacy
Villa Capra Bassani was built in 1764 to a design by the architect count Orazio Capra and is an example of neoclassical taste clearly inspired by Palladian architecture. It is the town's principal architectural landmark and a point of reference for those visiting the villas of the Vicenza foothills.
Villa Franzan and the English college at Barcon
In the locality of Barcon stands Villa Franzan, built between 1660 and 1670 by the counts Franzan. Between 1876 and 1907 the villa became the summer residence of the English Ladies' College of Vicenza, an unusual episode linking local history to that of British women's education in Italy.
A farming town on the edge of Thiene
Sarcedo retains a mainly agricultural character, with fields and vineyards alternating along the foothill slopes, despite lying a short distance from Thiene, one of the main towns of the Alto Vicentino. It offers a rural pace of life combined with proximity to the services of a larger centre.
