History and origins
Sernaglia has rural origins tied to farming the hills of the Quartier del Piave, but its best-known history dates to the 20th century, when the territory became the scene of fierce fighting during the First World War. After the defeat at Caporetto, the Italian front settled along the Piave, and it was in this very area that the Battle of the Solstice was fought in June 1918, a decisive clash that halted the last major Austro-Hungarian offensive. In memory of these events, the municipality's name was extended with 'della Battaglia', a lasting reminder of the sacrifice and strategic importance of this land.
The Prati di Sernaglia
One of the territory's most valuable features is the Prati di Sernaglia, a wetland formed along the course of the Piave, recognised for its natural value within the broader Quartier del Piave system. Fed by resurgence springs, these meadows host marsh vegetation and wildlife tied to wetland habitats, representing a rare example of a still well-preserved river ecosystem in the Veneto plain. The area is subject to environmental protection and offers nature trails suited to those seeking direct contact with the Piave landscape, away from the more crowded centres.
Vineyards and Prosecco
Sernaglia della Battaglia lies at the edge of the Prosecco hill area, with vineyards climbing the first slopes toward the heart of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG zone. Winegrowing is today one of the mainstays of the local economy, with family-run farms combining Prosecco production with other typical crops of the area.
